Castles and Pilgrims trekking tour
A delightful history-themed route, offering the chance to admire medieval castles, Romanesque churches dating back over a thousand years, and a marvellous mid-mountain landscape, all accompanied by fabulous typical cuisine and the wonderful wines of Emilia Romagna. We will also be finding out the secrets behind Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar, which of course we’ll be sampling at the end of our visit to the factory. When the trekking is over, we’ll have the chance to relax in a picturesque spa resort, in a hotel complete with wellness centre.

Vignola – AcetaiaSereni– Length: 10 km – Altitude difference: 200 m – Time (indicative): 3 h 15 m
The day starts with a visit to the splendid Rocca di Vignola, followed by an easywalkalongsidethe Panaro River,before finding out all the secrets behind Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar in a splendid factory, where we will have the chance to taste some vinegar aged for 25 years. The dinner menu will include specialities made with Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar.
Villabianca – Montalbano di Zocca –Length: 20 km – Altitude difference: 850 m – Time (indicative): 6 h
A splendid day in the Sassi di Roccamalatina Regional Park, including a climb up the marvellous cliffs and a visit to the finest hamlets, castles and parish churches in the Park. We will be sleeping in the ancient fortified village of Montalbano, in what was once the rectory, where a dinner of typical local produce will be served in front of centuries-old stone fireplace.
Montalbano di Zocca – Montese –Length: 18 km – Altitude difference: 760 m – Time (indicative): 6 h
Along our way we will have the chance to admire three alluring medieval castles, attesting to the importance of these places, nestling in a marvellous landscape. We will have the chance to discover the fantastic world of the Gea Gorge, with its age-old mill, and we will also be visiting the Historical Museum of the Rocca di Montese, dedicated to World War II. A traditional music concert a waits us in the evening.
Montese – Gaggio Montano –Length: 16 km – Altitude difference: 530 m – Time (indicative): 5 h
This route runs along a ridge, and will take us up to the peak of Mount Belvedere, where we can admire fabulous views out over the surrounding valleys. Because of their strategic importance, these places were fortified right from Roman times up to the days of the German troops fighting in the Second World War. Along the route, we will be able to admire ancient walls and a huge number of trenches and other signs of the Great War, as well as the marvellous landscape.
Gaggio Montano – Porretta –Length: 10.25 km – Altitude difference: 180 m – Time (indicative): 3 h
From the Gaggio Cliff, we will head along the Reno Valley to the renowned spa centre of Porretta Terme, where we will be able to relax in the hotel’s spa wellness centre. The wellness break can be extended on request.
